Living Labs

Methodologically, UNDERTREES is based on 3 pillars:

  1. Data collection at field and cropping system level (SO1-2);
  2. Adaptation of models for ecosystem services (ES) forecasting at temporal and spatial scale (SO1-3); and
  3. Participatory methods for stakeholder engagement to ensure a multi-actor cross-sectoral approach (SO2-3).

UNDERTREES identified 16 field study sites (Living Labs), in 7 countries (Table 1) underlying 5 climatic areas. Research activities will address specific challenges for each study site and will explore the potential for including other relevant study sites. Selected living labs provide the foundation for research (WP3-WP4) and training activities (WP2), to generate new and updated knowledge. Click on the image below to see a larger table.

Partners will contribute to co-design standard methodology for on-field monitoring and will support researchers in the correct implementation of experimental protocols and in the use of equipment. The adoption of a shared common methodology for sampling and monitoring is mandatory in order to allow the comparison among such different rural contexts and understand the potential of agroforestry (AF) systems to cope with climate change through the provision of ES related to carbon balance, soil fertility and the adaptation to climate variability. Moreover, the creation of a common client-server database will increase the opportunities of collaboration among researchers, and a strong effort will be put in the direction of teaching advanced methods for data management and harmonisation.
